The Mauritius Sports Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth & Sports proceeded with the Signature of Contract with sponsors in connection with After School Sports and Fitness Programme on Wednesday 19 April 2017 at Phoenix Gymnasium in the presence of:

The After school Sports and Fitness Program (ASSFP) will be carried out straight after school and in the school yard itself once a week, to start at 15h30 and end at 17h00 and will run for a period of 8 weeks per term.

Schools have been identified in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Education Human Resource and Scientific Research for the program. Approximately 40 children are expected in ASSFP per school.

OBJECTIVES: 

  • Expand time and opportunities for children and youth (aged 8 to 11, Grade 3 – 6) during the after school in order to actively and effectively support their holistic development. 
  • To reach large numbers of children and youth and engage them in healthy and positive activities during after school hours.
  • Address the growing problems of inactivity and obesity among the Mauritian population by inculcating healthy life style habits.
  • Encourage girls’ participation in sports as research indicates that two hours a week of exercise can substantially lower a teenage girl of a lifetime of breast cancer, increase self-esteem, decrease incidence of depression, pregnancy and smoking initiation.   

The benefits of ASSFP

  • Promotes physical health as well as healthy childhood and youth development.
  • After School Sports Program can with other measures help address the growing problems of inactivity and obesity among the Mauritian population by inculcating healthy lifestyle habits. 
  • Encourage girls participation in sport. Girls particularly benefit from playing sport.
  • Research indicates that two hours a week of exercise can substantially lower a teenage girl of a lifetime of breast cancer, and adolescent girls who exercise regularly can reduce their risk of obesity, coronary heart disease and osteoporosis.
  • Participation in sports is also linked to an increase in a girl’s self-esteem, positive body image, and self confidence as well as a decreased incidence of depression, pregnancy and smoking initiation. 
  • After School Sports and Fitness Program also promotes healthy development. Successful sports programs build character; responsibility and leadership skills, help children and youth improve school performance and nurture relationships with adult.
  • The After School Sports and Fitness Program will provide an opportunity for school age children to specialize in a specific sport and can be seen as a talent pool where our future champions can emerge from.
  • It will be complementary to the Physical Education curriculum and bestow the feeling of an active and dynamic school.
